“Competitors only exist if you allow them to.”
Depending on what mindset you have now, you will either truly believe that you have competitors or you will truly believe that there’s only competition.
The reason why some hugely successful companies are so far ahead in the competition is that they focus on themselves and not on others. Let’s have Google as an example.
Back in the early 90s, some companies recognized that they there’s money to make online. Google was one of them. Google realized that they can out do other search engine companies by focusing on what they can do and improve what they were offering than focusing on what others offer. Now, they are the most widely used search engine and have even expanded their products and services from just merely being a search engine.
The same mindset is what other huge companies believe like Apple, particularly the late Steve Jobs. Being a visionary, Jobs pushed for innovation vs. imitation. Think of iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
It is competition and not competitors that breed the need to innovate.
Stop stressing yourself with questions about your others. If you don’t, you are putting your company at a risk to lose its ability to innovate and may even lose sight of your own goals. Who knows, maybe they even have different goals. Don’t get too obsessed or else you won’t get anything done. Let them be obsessed on you. Believe it or not, others are as much concerned as you are. You are much better than them, so break that bad habit of always looking at your sides. Start looking ahead.
When you focus on what others are doing and try to be better at them, then you are simply imitating. But when you focus on what your company can do, then you are leading the way to innovation.
Focus on what you can control – your company. Whether you like it or not, you have very little control or no control at all on others. Do not waste precious time, effort, and energy trying to change what you can’t really change.
You are not competing with others if they are trying to beat you. You are not competing with others if they are trying to be better than you. You are not competing with others if they are trying to provide better products and services. Thus, you only compete with yourself.
Do your own thing. Come up with new products and services. Discover new opportunities even before others do. By doing so, you will not be part of the pack, but you will lead the pack.
